Seek To Understand Your Work Response

In the true words of Steven Covey – “seek to understand before you seek to be understood”

Digital publishing and internet marketing are inseparable. There is no mystery in reminding you that there is no point spending hours producing a masterpiece ebook if it is not marketed effectively.  Yet many online publishers and marketers do focus too much on one part of this duet to the expense of the other.

Balancing the act is often as simple as scheduling. I am the first to admit that my enthusiasm and curiosity lead my off task far too often. But at least I am aware of it and I have a system that works for me to bring me back on track.

Knowing your own work habits is not as obvious as it may appear. I strongly suggest that you keep a work log for a week and just note what you did and for how long. Compare this to your to-do list [you do have one of those, right!]  If not, I strongly suggest you start there.

Learn And Understand Your Work Response

The biggest challenge I faced when I first started on the digital publishing journey about a year ago was my lack of knowledge as to how long any task took. Needless to say, my To-Do list could only be described as very aggressive, and totally unachievable. After keeping simple logs of tasks on hand, I became much more aware as to how long each of these tasks, and like tasks took. I also discovered which tasks I could easily achieve at the end of a long day and which tasks were best left until a fresh start in the morning. I refer to this throughout as your work response. Which tasks you tend to procrastinate over [yes, I do that also] because you just don’t want to deal with the frustrations that seem to go along with using buggy software. And in amongst the internet marketing software there is a very high percentage that fall into this category. In some instances, I am on my third attempt at buying a suitable product. I must say though, that most vendors provide a 100% satisfaction 30-day return guarantee. And the support is pretty good as well in trying to solve any problems you do have.

In summary, before you start down the digital publishing track, know your work habits and get used to working with defined daily goals and feedback system, such as a task management log.
